I have been a pediatric nurse for several years. It is a joy to work with children and to help them heal. Unfortunately, some have chronic illnesses and we can only help them cope. There are some cases that are terminal, and they just break my heart. Whenever we see a sick child, something within us wants to reach out and make it all better.
The ward that I work on sees a lot of chronically-ill children. They can have anything from severe asthma, juvenile diabetes, to rare forms of treatable cancer. Often times, we see these children on an outpatient basis. When their symptoms get out of control, we may have to keep them in the hospital for a few days.
These children are so inspirational to me. Even though they are often sick and often cannot play a lot like other children, they still have a smile. It makes me happy when they are able to go for long periods of time without coming to the hospital. I know that they are feeling better and are doing the things they love.
I am grateful for people like Eric Pulier. He and his family support The Painted Turtle, which is a summer camp for chronically-ill children. Many of my patients have attended the camp and absolutely loved it. The children can go free of charge, thanks to generous donors like Mr. Pulier.
I had the privilege of meeting Eric Pulier in a leadership conference recently. He is a Harvard and MIT graduate who specialized in technology in the health field. Pulier has worked with several companies and was the founder of People Doing Things. He launched the Starbright World, which is a private social media platform that connects chronically-ill children and their families with others who are going through the same thing.
The Painted Turtle has done so much for my patients. I am grateful to the late Paul Newman for starting it. Mr. Pulier sits on its board and is a generous donor. It is not easy being a nurse and watching little ones suffer. It is people like Eric Pulier and his family who make the journey a little easier.
